Daily Kos GOTV: Convention wisdom does not equal votes

Over the past few days, I’ve stopped to thank and visit with volunteers who are making a difference in our field offices across the state.

What amazes me about our volunteers is their commitment, and their view that the only poll that matters is the one taken on Election Day. It would be easy to look at the public polls showing us up and assume they could take it easy – that making the calls and knocking on the doors isn’t really important any more, but in every office, any time of day, they are hard at work.

Last week I was in our office in Smyrna when a volunteer came up to me and declared that she didn’t care what the polls said because the election was too important for her to chance it. She said that her Republican friends were starting to warm to our opponent and didn’t trust the conventional wisdom.

She’s right, and we need everyone to listen to her message.

My Tea Party opponent's first television advertisement since the primary election hits the airwaves today and in it, twice she tells viewers: “I'm you.”

She’s me?

To be Christine O’Donnell, you'd have to think homosexuality was an “identity disorder.” You'd have to be anti-choice, anti-stem cells, but pro-outsourcing of American jobs. You'd have to want Creationism taught in public schools, but not sexual education. You'd have to want to expand offshore drilling but further de-regulate Wall Street.

Is that you? It certainly isn't me.

That's why this morning we launched a website, ChristineIsNotMe.com, to give folks the opportunity to tell Christine O'Donnell that she was not them.

The night she won the Republican primary, Christine O’Donnell was asked what her top priorities would be if she was elected to the Senate.

The next morning when I read that "creating health care vouchers for veterans" was near the top of the list, I recoiled at the thought of such a dangerous and irresponsible idea.

Serving those who’ve honorably served our country is a responsibility of our government. It isn’t a burden to be handed off in a misguided attempt at cutting costs.

One of the solemn honors Delaware holds is being home to Dover Air Force Base. Over the years too many of our brave soldiers have been flown into Dover after dying in the noble service of our country. When they arrive, each one of them is treated with the dignity and honor befitting their heroism and service to our great nation.

As the service members of the 3rd Infantry Regiment fulfill their own mission – the dignified return to American soil of the remains of the fallen inside flag-draped caskets – their focus is squarely on honoring the sacrifice of the soldier before them.

No one asks if that soldier was a man or a woman. No one asks if they were gay or straight. They know one thing – this solider died in service to their fellow Americans.

Any American prepared to die for his or her country deserves our respect and admiration. Their sexual orientation should have no bearing.

That is why I object so strongly to Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the abhorrent views of my Tea Party opponent, Christine O’Donnell.

Christine O'Donnell's surprise win in the Republican primary makes our campaign for the Senate more important than ever. With the Democratic majority hanging by a thread, Delaware is a "must-win" state for turning back the Tea Party and its backward-looking, right-wing agenda.

Delaware deserves a Senator who will focus on the issues that matter to families across the state - and none is more urgent than fixing our economy and putting Delawareans back to work. My new opponent has no plan for promoting job growth here in Delaware or around the country.
